# 1.07 Percentages.

Percentages are basically just fractions (1/100) of some total amount. ie 1 % of an amount is 1/100 of the total and 60 % is 60/100 of the total

## Finding percentages of a given value

If you are given an amount and asked to calculate percentages of this amount it is quite a simple process.

e.g. to find 15%, 60% and 150% of 250

- 15 % of 250 = (250/100) x 15 = 37.5
- 60 % of 250 = (250/100) x 60 = 150
- 150 % of 250 = (250/100) x 150 = 375

As illustrated above to find a percentage of any given amount we first divide that amount by 100 then multiply by the percentage we want to find

## Expressing one number as a percentage of another number

- example 1: What percentage of 175 is 35?
- (35/175) x 100) = 20%

- example 2: What percentage of 40 is 160?
- 160/40 x 100 = 400%

- example 3: What percentage of 300 is 75?
- 75/300 x 100 = 25%

As illustrated above, to express one number “**b**” as a percentage of another “**a**” we simply divide **b** by **a** then multiply by 100.
